Men in High Heels

While the idea of men in high heels makes most of us cringe or even laugh right aloud, high heels for men are actually in! While most men don't wear high heels that are made for women, more and more men's shoes are being made with a heel, and technically they are high heels! While some men may choose to wear high heels that are made for women, the majority of men don't, but they are still indulging in the high-heeled look that has been appealing to women for years! Men in high heels may be something that makes most of us gasp, but it is becoming more and more common, just look at the feet of the men in your life!

Men in high heels are becoming more common because shoes are becoming important now, even for men. Your average, every day Joe now cares what his shoes look like so much that he will go to a special store and drop more money than he did on his Nike Jordan's in the 1980s. Shoes are in for men, because most men are learning that shoes are part of the overall look, something women have known for years. Style is becoming more and more important, and shoes are a big part of style now, even for men so the high heel rules for both men and women right now.

Because there is this new awareness on the part of men about their shoes, men in high heels simply seem natural. Therefore, they are not stilettos but they are higher heels then men have been wearing in recent history. Dress shoes with a thicker heal, men's shoes with a thicker sole, boots with higher heels and soles, as well as casual boots with a substantial heel are all very popular in men's shoes right now. Of course, these men's high heels don't look feminine at all and because the look is so popular most men don't even notice that the hell is higher than they have been in their shoes in the past. What men do know about these high heels is that they look good with all of their clothes.

Men in High Heels

We're seeing men in high heels everywhere! Men are wearing these newer high-heeled shoes to the clubs, to work, casually on their days off of work, even to church. The style right now is just the high heel and the chunky sole, so these shoes can be seen just about everywhere that you can think of. The reason that they are being seen so often is that the high-heeled look is very versatile so that men can wear them with business attire, business causal attire, and even casual wear so it does not seem to matter what he is wearing, a man can wear his high-heeled shoes.

This men in high heels phase has been growing over the last several years, but the fashion trend seems to have peaked and is very popular right now. Even the most traditional men are finding these higher heels very sharp looking, so you'll see men in just about every age group taking part in this fashion. It doesn't seem to matter how old or young a man is or what he does for a living, he'll buy the shoes that look good. Many men also feel as though the higher heels are very comfortable, so much so that they wouldn't go back to the lower heels if they were given the chance. The chunkier sole often gives more cushion, especially in the better-made shoes.

Wedding Speeches And Messages Worth Noting

Witnessing a bond between a man and a woman is something that is considered a once in a lifetime event. Celebrating this meaningful event is made even more exciting the moment the bride and the groom profess their eternal love for each other. A lot of wedding ceremonies have been meaningful primarily because of the wedding speeches done by people close to the newly wed. Apart from other wedding traditions and the celebration of love coupled with scrumptious foods and well wishers, the most anticipated portion of the celebration is the wedding speeches.

Wedding speeches are usually given by people close to the married couple. This can be a member of the family of either the bride or groom or close friends and relatives. Giving a wedding speech does not necessarily follow a format. A person asked to do a speech should give out something that will make both the bride and the groom beam with happiness. There are instances where wedding speakers are being carried away by their emotions that may be due to overjoyed feeling or excitement; yet, cracking jokes that may lead to something awkward and discomforting should be avoided.

Injections - How Much is an ml, cc, IU?

In many countries, steroids are legal and even can be purchased over the counter. As a results many of these injectable anabolics are administered by the user. Below is information aiding in the conversion of such drugs. This article does not endorse the use of illegal drugs.

I. U.= international unit. This is a unit used to measure the activity (that is, the effect) of many vitamins and drugs. For each substance to which this unit applies, there is an international agreement specifying the biological effect expected with a dose of 1 IU. Other quantities of the substance are then expressed as multiples of this standard. This also means that this measurment is not based on sheer volume or weight of the substance, but rather the effect.

Comics Humor

ml = milliliter. This is a VOLUME measurement. it is 1/1000 of a liter. when talking about water or similar liquids, it is equivalent to one cubic centimeter.

Injections - How Much is an ml, cc, IU?

cc = cubic centimeter. This is also a VOLUME measurement. Most syringes measure their capacity in cc's. If you have a 5cc syringe, it will hold ~5ml of liquid in it.

mg = milligram. This is a WEIGHT measurement. It is 1/1000 of a gram. the amount of chemical substance is often measured in milligrams. For injectable solutions, this will be reported as a concentration of weight to volume, such as mg/ml (milligrams per milliliter). In the case of orally administered substances, the weight of chemical is labeled, athough the actual weight of the pill/capsule may be much higher, because of the use of filler substances. This means that a small pill may be much more potent than a large pill, so don't judge a pill based on its size, but the actual amount of substance for which it is labeled as.

mcg = microgram = 1/1000 of a mg (milligram) There are one thousand micrograms in one milligram.

Conversion factors:

1000 mcg (microgram) = 1 mg (milligram)

1000 mg (milligram) = 1 g (gram)

1000 g (gram) = 1 kg (kilogram)

1000 ml (milliliter) = 1 liter

1ml (water) = 1cc (water)

1ml (oil) ~ 1cc (oil) (~ denotes approximately equal to)

Examples putting it all together

Say a user has some Drug XYX from two different companies. One is 'XYX-300' from QV, and one from BM which is 'XYZ-100'. Both of these are XYZ DRUG, but they have different concentrations. What this means is....

for the XYZ-300:

if you take 1 ml (one milliliter) of this solution, it will take up ~1cc (one cubic centimeter) of space in the syringe. There will be 300mg (three hundred milligrams) of XYZ in this dosage.

for the XYZ-100:

if you take 1 ml (one milliliter) of this solution, it will take up ~1cc (one cubic centimeter) of space in the syringe. There will be 100mg (one hundred milligrams) of XYZ in this dosage.

If you put the syringes side by side, they appear the exact same, so what is the difference? the XYZ-300 has a concentration of 300mg/ml, while the XYZ-100 only has a concentration of 100mg/ml. This means that the syringe with XYZ-300 has three times (3x) the amount of DRUG XYZ in the same exact volume as the syringe with XYZ-100.

Injections - How Much is an ml, cc, IU?

His Most Famous Painting (Le Dejeuner Sur L'herbe Or the Lunch on the Grass) - Edouard Manet

Edouard Manet (1832-1883) was a French painter, associated with the 'Realist' movement, whose rebellious style became an inspiration for 'Impressionism.' His greatest early works "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Lunch on the Grass)" and 'Olympia' created much controversy when they were first exhibited. Nevertheless, they became the jewels in the crown for Manet and model works for the new generation artists.

"Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass)" is a large oil painting on canvas, 81.9" x 104.5" in dimensions, a size that was traditionally used for mythological or historical subjects. This grandeur work was one of the most unorthodox one of its kind, which attracted negative reviews and interest at the same time. Created during 1862-63, this painting had to meet rejection at its maiden submission for the 1863 Salon, but was later exhibited at the Salon des Refusés of King Louis-Napoleon, and is currently placed at Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Its criticism was on the grounds of its unusually muscular forms and thick brush strokes, although, it was the size, theme, and the manner of representation that left the viewers flabbergasted.

Comics Humor

The scene of "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Lunch on the Grass)" is set in a park with thick vegetation, translating into a dark backdrop against which the three leading figures, two fully dressed men and nude woman, are shown sitting. The sheer size of the painting and the bright skin color against the unusually dark background makes the nude figure, the focal point of the work. The painting features a fourth figure, a woman draped in white, coming out of a pond after a bath, in the background. Manet's portrayal of the nude is not in line with the classic treatment of the subject in the form of a sleek smooth physical structure. Rather, it features a plump figure (believed to be that of Manet's wife Suzanne) with the face of his pet model Victorine Louise Meurent.

His Most Famous Painting (Le Dejeuner Sur L'herbe Or the Lunch on the Grass) - Edouard Manet

With the setting and the style, "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Lunch on the Grass)" appears to be sarcasm on the contemporary social scenario in France vis-a-vis the status of women and the widely prevalent prostitution. This is more evident by the mien of the woman, who is sitting at ease with the two men, and is looking towards the viewer in a defiant manner. Her feet are placed between the legs of the man, half-lying on the ground and her clothes are lying on the ground on which some leftover fruits and bread are scattered. The two men, allegedly Ferdinand Leenhoff (Edouard's brother-in-law) and Eugene Manet (brother), are dressed in sophisticated attire and seem to be talking to each other. The man lying on the ground has a posture, closely resembling that of Michelangelo's 'The Creation of Adam' and is shown gesturing at the woman with his right hand. It is not certain whether the woman is ignoring the men or they are ignoring her.

The weak background of the painting reflects a studio setting, rather than a real one. Even the light effects are artificial and manipulated, as there are no shadows and no changing shades. The inspiration for "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass)," probably, was derived from Titan's 'The Pastoral Concert' and Giorgione's 'The Tempest,' both of them featuring clothed men and unclothed women. No matter how much dissension Manet drew on the account of his unconventional depictions, "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Lunch on the Grass)" remains an inspirational masterpiece that focuses on the 'real' as opposed to the 'ideal.'

The Statue of David by Michelangelo

The Statue of David was sculpted during a three year period beginning in 1501 by the artist Michelangelo. The subject of the work is the Biblical King David in the moment that he makes the decision to fight Goliath. The seventeen foot tall statue became the symbol of defending the civic liberties of the Florentine Republic, an area surrounded by more powerful states and the powerful Medici family. The sculpture originally stood outside the seat of government in Florence, the Palazzo della Signoria.

Michelangelo wasn't the original artist of the sculpture. A group of officials sought to commission a twelve sculptures based on the Old Testament to grace decorate a cathederal. The first two were completed by Donatello and Agostino di Duccio, his assistant. The buyers contacted di Duccio to create the work of David. He shaped the legs, feet and figure and began to do some drapery work before he left the projects, possibly due to the death of Donatello. Antonio Rossellino took over the sculpting product but he was essentially fired.

Comics Humor

The partially altered chunk of marble sat that way for the next twenty five years in the yard of a workshop. The block of marble became smaller due to exposure to the elements. The deterioration of their pricey investment was enough for the group of buyers to restart the process of finding an artist. Various artists were interviewed for the task, including Leonardo da Vinci, but Michelangelo was finally hired in 1501.

The Statue of David by Michelangelo

David is thought to be preparing for battle since the body of Goliath is not included and the young man's body is tense and ready for action. There are bulging veins in his hand and a twisting in his body. But there are those who think it shows him in the moments after his victory, when he is contemplating his victory.

The statue is standing in the contrapposto pose that prevailed during the High Renaissance. His weight is shifted onto his right leg while the left is relaxed. To balance that out, his left arm is in motion (holding the rock) while his right hangs to his side. It is a very naturalistic stance. The pedestal of marble below him is treated as though it were something he just stepped up onto.

His proportions aren't as realistic. The head and upper region of the body are larger than the lower parts of the body. The hands are also disproportionately large. The proportions are defended by experts as being accurate for the original intended home of the statue, high up on a church where the body's ratio would have looked accurate. There is some controversy surrounding the fact that the David in the statue is not circumcised when the real life king would have been.

A vandal attacked the statue in 1991, damaging some of the toes on the left foot with a hammer before he was restrained. The first serious cleaning of the statue since 1843 happened in 2003 with no damage done to the statue although there were concerns by many scholars before hand.

1950s Family Life

When looking back at past eras, the 1950s is looked upon by some as an idyllic time in American history. The nuclear family headed by a male breadwinner was the desired norm and televisions shows such as Father Knows Best and I Love Lucy were popular. However, there was a dark underside during this era. Women were treated like second-class citizens and some were living unhappily married because their financial and educational options were limited.

The media, in collusion with the government, and family sociologists constantly espoused the virtues of family and children and women, who wanted more out of life, were looked upon as freaks of nature. However, some women during 1950s expressed dissatisfaction with their lives and an unarticulated longing for a life beyond their children and husbands. Some of these wives were forced out the workforce after World War II and felt resentment that their only option for financial stability was marriage. This unarticulated longing would lead to a major social upheaval towards the end of the 1950s and would be the beginning of the second-wave feminist movement. This movement caused a shift in family values and altered family structure for future generations to come. The 1950s Family Experiment would be short-lived but fondly remembered.

Comics Humor

Several factors lead to the forming of the nuclear family. By the end of the 1940s, the divorce rate dropped sharply; the age of marriage feel to a 100-year low; and the birth rate soared. Women dropped out of the workforce as soon as they become pregnant and some young women had two or more children in diapers at once. Also during this time, the education gap between young middle-class men and women increased and job segregation for working women and men peaked. Limited educational and job opportunities for women made them more dependent on marriage for their financial well-being.

1950s Family Life

Young, newly married couples were encouraged to sever their family ties and put all their emotional and financial eggs in the small basket of the immediate nuclear family. Women were told by experts that all their energies should be used for their husbands and children, not aging parents and other relatives. Psychiatrist Edward Strecker and various colleagues argued American boys were infantilized and emasculated by women who were old-fashioned "moms" instead of modern "mothers".

Modern mothers placed their parents in nursing homes; old-fashioned mothers took their parents in at the expense of their own "important" nuclear family. A modern mother was not supposed to have friends, a job, or anything or anyone that would take attention from her husband and children. She was also supposed to grant early independence to her male child. It is no wonder that many women who believed in this advice and put it into practice ending up abusing alcohol or tranquilizers over the course of the decade.

Women were encouraged to confine themselves to a very narrow definition of "true" womanhood by a variety of sources such as family education specialists and marriage counselors, columns in women's magazines, government pamphlets, and above all television. These experts told women during the 1950s that their greatest role on the planet was to be wives and mothers. The role of a "real" woman was to have no interest in a higher education or a career and women were taught by these experts to pity women who had the nerve to want a life beyond being a wife and mother.

Televisions shows such as Donna Reed, Ozzie and Harriet, Leave It to Beaver, and Father Knows Best showed women how much easier their lives would be if their families were like those families and the I Love Lucy show warned women about the perils of what happened to a woman who wanted a career or if she schemed behind her husband's back (Coontz 38), The mothers on Leave It to Beaver and Ozzie and Harriet were immaculately dressed with pearls around their necks. Their homes were clean and their children never got into trouble. However, on I Love Lucy, Lucy usually looked terrible by the end of the episode. Her hair was at times standing on top of her head and her clothes filthy from her weekly adventure. Women and their families watched these shows and tried their best to emulate the perfect and bright lives shown to them on a weekly basis.

However, towards the end of the 1950s, a dramatic shift occurred. Cultural values changed dramatically and the children of these women found the social immortality of their parents sickening. Many young adults and their mothers would march in the streets to protest against sexism, racism, and militarism. Minorities and women began to receive the civil rights that were rightfully due to them and more and more women entered the workforce, forcing a dynamic shift in childrearing practices. By the 1970s, husbands and wives had begun to share household duties and women were no longer bound to their homes.

The concept of family has changed and sometimes it was for the best, sometimes for the worst. Although women have more rights, divorce is commonplace in our current society and many children live in one-parent households. Women are still discriminated against in American society and some us still do the majority of household work regardless of how many hours we work per week or if we have a house-husband. But we now have opportunities that would not have been imagined fifty-years ago. Children do not have to see their mothers treated like chattel and we almost had a female President of the United States. Nothing remains the same - ever. The constantly changing landscape of the American family owes a lot to the women of the 1950s.

Cartooning Your Way to English or Foreign Language Learning Success

Cartoons vs. Comics

Who doesn't love cartoons and comics? Okay, so I'm no fan of the Simpsons, but even I enjoy Felix the Cat, the Pink Panther and a host of other Saturday morning offerings. If the cartoon network came on in English where I live, I'd record it for use in my English as a foreign language (EFL) classes (and a little personal humor and enjoyment). There are two venues which actually can be used in teaching English as a foreign language or in foreign language teaching and learning; cartoons and comics. What's the difference?

Comics Humor

The Differences

Cartooning Your Way to English or Foreign Language Learning Success

What's the difference between a cartoon and a comic? Simply that a cartoon is an animated visual format with sound and a comic is a written, printed format in black and white or color. Some characters appear in multiple formats, having an animated series on TV, movie or comic strip. Characters from Peanuts, cats Felix and Garfield, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and a host of Walt Disney and Walter Lantz characters are some examples. Other characters may appear in only one format such as in many video games which is yet another venue.

Who Do You Love?

Why don't you try asking your English or foreign language learners;

"Who's your favorite cartoon or comic character?"

"Why?"

Learners could then elaborate on their favorite character in addition to:

o describing the character's personality

o acting out a scene from a cartoon or comic

o white out dialogue bubbles and write in their own lines of dialogue

Adapting Comics and Cartoons for Classroom Teaching

How can these different formats be adapted for use in an EFL or foreign language learning classroom setting? Well, you've hit the jackpot here. Because the language in comics and cartoons is usually very simple, it can be used in a variety of ways, such as:

o to demonstrate high-frequency vocabulary in context

o to illustrate idioms and expressions

o to teach verbs and other parts of speech

o as examples of connected speech

o to simulate dialogues to inject humor into class sessions

o to provide a basis for oral discourse and writing activities

o to illustrate culture and values

Other Related Activity Possibilities

Numerous other related activity possibilities exist, which may be applied with just a bit of imagination. For example, have your English or foreign language learners relate:

o who the author or creator of the comic / cartoon series is

o a biography of the author with photos

o describe the setting and theme of the comic or cartoon series

o show examples of cartoons, comics and characters in class, then compare them

If you'd like even more focus, you could show a cartoon or comic strip series in class to familiarize everyone with the character(s). Then might discuss the character's personality and other elements and ask,

"Why is this cartoon or comic funny?"

Be sure to let the learners interact about their favorite comic strips and cartoon characters.

Take a Survey

Remember to take a survey of who the most popular cartoon and comic strip characters are among the learners. Better yet, have the learners design and conduct the survey themselves, presenting the results and reasons afterwards. By all means, do let Felix the Cat, the Pink Panther, the Simpsons, Garfield, the Power Puff Girls, Hagar the Horrible, the Wizard of Id, Peanuts and a generous host of English language cartoon and comic strip characters lend fun, flavor, magic and a whole new dimension to your English as a foreign language or foreign language learning classes.

A fun craft idea to do during the shower is to personalize baby gifts as they are opened. Of course, be sure the baby's name is set in stone before you begin this one! All you need to do these crafts is a variety of color fabric paint pens bought at any craft supply store.

For instance, when the mother opens a gift, the most artistic one in the group can decoratively write the baby's name on the side of the gift. Be sure to check with the mother and see if she is interested in this idea. This can save her time, as most gifts will need to be labeled anyway. Certain gifts may not be appropriate for labeling; use your best judgment. Also, some drying time may need to be allowed. Take care to prevent smudging!

Another great craft idea for involving an older brother or sister is to have him or her paint a picture or write a short baby poem or letter for the new baby. When finished, this project framed and matted simply becomes one of the most meaningful gifts, no matter how artistically done. The older sibling will feel pride in their part of welcoming their new baby brother or sister. Hang or display in a prominent place in the baby's nursery.

A baby themed comic collection is another great baby shower craft idea to help lighten the rough days. Baby shower crafts of this kind takes a little more time and preparation, but what an enjoyable collection when finished!

Enlist others to help hunt down the best and funniest baby themed comics around. Check out magazines and newspapers. Display in a scrapbook or on a poster at the baby shower. Decorate with any appropriate baby trinkets, and be sure to stick with the theme. Who doesn't like a good laugh? And no one will need one more than a new mother after she's had several sleepless nights and lots of dirty diapers to change!

Baby shower crafts that takes a little bit of planning but makes a fabulous sentimental gift is a handprint quilt. You will need to precut quilt squares to do this. Choose fabric and style to match the mother's nursery décor. Make sure you have enough squares - one for each guest.

As guests arrive at the shower, have them stick their hand in paint and make a simple handprint on a single square and sign their name. Try glitter, silver or gold fabric paint for a decorative touch. Let them dry. Then someone sews together the finished project. Optional: leave room for a larger block in the middle that says the baby's name, birth date if known, and the phrase "Surrounded by Love".

Finally, the favorite baby shower crafts - this one's to be done during the actual baby shower. You will need one or two disposable cameras, access to a one hour photo developer, a scrapbook and scrapbooking supplies, and a couple of volunteers. For more information on baby shower scrapbooking ideas go to our page on Scrap Booking Tips.

As guests arrive, take a picture of each guest with the mother or mother and baby, and take several random, candid pictures. You want to photograph the decorations, the table setting, and the cake if there is one.

When the cameras are full, have a volunteer rush to have them developed. I suggest calling your store in advance to let them know what you are doing and to make sure they can meet your time restraints. Then, when the baby shower pictures return, start scrapbooking! Ideally, baby shower guests would get to do the page with their picture on it. Usually, it's easy to keep this project a secret and present at the end of the baby shower.

The mother has an instant keepsake, and again you have saved her valuable time and energy. Whether you're scrapbooking or not, be sure to take lots of pictures. Be sure to set aside adequate space for these baby shower crafts, and delegate as many tasks as possible.
